Hey Canada... Need help I won those 2 old coins from Lower Canada. traditionally I put a person's picture or the regions flag as a back ground when framing the coins for display. I've run into a problem and good old Google is making it even worse for me and getting me all confused. I know the old Canadian Dominion flag probably was not used to represent Lower Canada prior to 1867. Is this the official flag or just a Whisky River Rebellion flag? or please point me in the right direction so I might plan the coins background and it's location in the house. I tentatively have the frame selected for the display. |

I am not a historian. Perhaps Jack has a better knowledge. A quick search shows that there were many flag variations over the years that the Province of Lower Canada was called thus. The most common image I could find was: Green over white over red stripes with yellow star in the left corner of the green stripe. I tried to copy and past an image, but it didn't work.

http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/ca-qc%7D18.html Bret, try looking at the above site. It gives a good explanation of the various flags used by Lower Canada. The one with the yellow star was used by an extremist faction, and may not be the most appropriate for a back drop.

I am no expert, but it would seem to me that that official flags would follow two possibilities. One the flag for all of the areas would be the Union Jack (the flag of the UK used even today). The actual flag of Province Du Bas (if there was one) would encompass the French Fleur De Lis; as the current Quebec flag does. I would suggest that in the absence of an official flag; to days Quebec flag would be appropriate.

One a site that I was on, it showed that Province Du Bas, although French speaking; it was also British territory; and therefore the official flag was in fact the British flag of that time.
